Sorghum's Back in Style
A line of sweet sorghums was added
to the line of high-quality gourmet sauces and seasonings
from Bourbon Barrel Foods (877/307-6418 or
www.bourbonbarrelfoods.com)
that reflect the rich heritage of Kentucky’s bourbon
country. The new line includes: straight Kentucky
Sweet Sorghum, Bourbon Vanilla Sorghum, and Blueberry
Sorghum. The company is leading the resurgence of
sorghum, which was a staple in Kentucky kitchens before
World War II, but then skipped a generation. It is
making a comeback for its health benefits and as an
alternative to using highfructose corn syrup or other
highly processed sweeteners and colorants.

Not-So-Plain Vanilla
Plain vanilla is definitely not
the way to describe the new Gourmet Vanilla line from
Frontier Natural Products Coop (800/669-3275
or www.frontiercoop.com).
The exotic premium vanillas offer divergent flavor
profiles. Each is available as both an extract and
whole beans. Organic Ugandan Vanilla has a sweet,
smooth and subtle flavor. The vanilla from Papua New
Guinea is extra-sweet and features floral notes, making
it perfect for desserts and sauces. Because of the
way organic Indonesian vanilla beans are cured, their
flavor holds up at high temperatures, an ideal vanilla
for baking.
