In 2016, about 25 percent ofspecialtyfoodconsumers say they bought products with special-interest claims or positions this year. That number has been consistent over the past three years, and Millennials were the most likely group to purchase such items. However, now the older consumer groups are jumping on board as well.

While keeping an eye on their health, Boomers are also known for seeking out those “all-natural,” “non-GMO” or “organic” claims on the packaging because they’re looking to specialty foods as a way to eat more healthfully and avoid artificial ingredients and preservatives, according to “Today’s Specialty Food Consumer 2016.”

Similarly, Gen Xers also value the health benefits of these types of claims. This consumer group is also the most likely to say they are averse to GMOs in the food supply. In fact, in 2015, 27 percent said GMOs should never been used in food items. In 2016, that number jumped to a whopping 38 percent.

It’s clear that all-natural, non-GMO and other health and ethical claims is where the industry is headed.
