Cooking sauces make or break a meal. They’re the foundation of quick-meal cooking, and today, they span the flavor spectrum: ethnic fusion, traditional American barbecue, hot wing flavors, Italian pasta favorites and more. Gourmet shoppers are not interested in a cut-and-dry, one-sauce-fits-all option, however. Instead, they want a grill sauce that doubles as a marinade, or a simmering sauce that can create a hearty chili one day and a beef brisket the next. The packaged sauce category is, essentially, a meal-starter kit. Pizza sauces, in particular, have one of the biggest growth in rates in retail, according to the Specialty Food Association.

Retailers are experiencing sales growth, and the top department for those sales in 2015 was the specialty grocery department. Market the versatility of these sauces and promote each as a quick-fix option for mealtime at home, and customers will oblige.
